One happy Island\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Aruba. One happy Island es la carta de presentaci\u00f3n inscrita en las matr\u00edculas de los autos de ese peque\u00f1o pa\u00eds de las Antillas de Sotavento. Integr\u00f3 las llamadas \u201cislas in\u00fatiles\u201d, t\u00e9rmino acu\u00f1ado por los conquistadores espa\u00f1oles para designar aquellos territorios con escasos recursos naturales. En posesi\u00f3n de Holanda, form\u00f3 parte de las Antillas Holandesas hasta 1986. Tras un exiguo per\u00edodo de esplendor con la crianza de ganado o la extracci\u00f3n de oro, muchos de sus hombres marchaban a territorios vecinos entre los siglos XIX y XX, como Cuba, en busca de empleo en la industria azucarera y otros perfiles laborales.<\/span>\u00b9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hoy florece como destino del turismo global en las tropicales aguas del Mar Caribe.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Es un contexto del que se conoc\u00eda poco o casi nada. Sin embargo, cada pa\u00eds construye su historia y su tradici\u00f3n y Aruba tiene la suya. En un fundamentado estudio Adi Martis y Jennifer Smit revisan los procesos del arte all\u00ed hasta los a\u00f1os noventa en el libro\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arte. Dutch Caribbean Art\/Beeldende kunst van de Nederlandse Antillen en Aruba, 2002.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">2002.<\/span>\u00b2 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">La d\u00e9cada del noventa ser\u00e1 determinante en la aparici\u00f3n de un grupo de artistas, casi todos con estudios en academias holandesas, con un modo muy peculiar de entender el arte que bien podr\u00eda ser considerado como movimiento aunque no existiera de por medio manifiesto aglutinador alguno. Estas voces marcan un viraje a partir del cuestionamiento de los procederes, contenidos, formas y g\u00e9neros en manos de sus antecesores.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Las respuestas art\u00edsticas convergen en dos grandes direcciones. En la primera l\u00ednea encajan los modos de visionar el paisaje, el entorno humano y sus posibles derivaciones. Con un amplio hacer pict\u00f3rico, Ludwig de L\u2019Isle asume la perspectiva ling\u00fc\u00edstica de la abstracci\u00f3n casi pura, dejando entrever s\u00f3lo ligeros atisbos de conexi\u00f3n con lo natural. Dimensi\u00f3n m\u00e1s profunda la aportan otros imaginarios de compenetraci\u00f3n con el environment y anclaje en los desplazamientos de lo temporal. En\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Los privilegios de la vista<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Octavio Paz reconoc\u00eda que la conquista de la modernidad se resolv\u00eda en la exploraci\u00f3n del subsuelo, del mito y de la realidad. En un reservorio ancestral como Aruba revelaciones de este tipo cobran extraordinario sentido, pues algunos artistas indagan en el \u201csubsuelo\u201d local, en el inicio de todas las cosas, pasando a compartir mecanismos de base arqueol\u00f3gica latentes en la visualidad latinoamericana de los ochenta y los noventa, de \u201cexhumaci\u00f3n\u201d de los archivos de ese origen como instrumental expresivo y de investigaci\u00f3n.\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Por m\u00e1s de treinta a\u00f1os el contexto ha sido el leitmotiv de\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">de Stan Kuiperi.<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0A ra\u00edz de su participaci\u00f3n en la II Bienal de Pintura del Caribe y Centroam\u00e9rica de Santo Domingo, Rep\u00fablica Dominicana, 1994, recuerdo hablaba de su pintura como consecuencia abstracto-expresionista del medio ambiente. Si Brancusi encontraba en conchas, guijarros y otros elementos naturales inspiraci\u00f3n para sus formas escult\u00f3ricas, Kuiperi introduce en sus cuadros de manera activa referentes mat\u00e9ricos como la arena, los caracoles, plumas, huesos, madera y piedra, utilizados tanto por la riqueza expresiva que aportan como por sus connotaciones simb\u00f3licas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">En fechas recientes, confirma estar en condiciones de expandir el radio de acci\u00f3n de su obra, capaz de lidiar con objetos diversos y dominar los secretos de su disposici\u00f3n espacial, en instalaciones como\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kasike: monument to a Paradise Lost<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, 2011 y\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the road<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, 2012. Abath transita con asombrosa maleabilidad de material en material desde la arcilla y la cer\u00e1mica al metal, hasta incorporar el vidrio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Si en un primer acercamiento, formas y estructuras discursan sobre culturas ancestrales o preteridas, su producci\u00f3n admite otras posibles lecturas.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A moment 1<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, 2012, su m\u00e1s ambicioso proyecto hasta ahora, reprodujo un dispositivo de ruedas dentadas perfectamente dispuestas en el interior de un\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">container<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00bfMaquinaria de reloj, f\u00e1brica azucarera? En objetos h\u00edbridos y\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">assemblages\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hac\u00eda converger troncos y ramas de \u00e1rboles con componentes electr\u00f3nicos e industriales, en raras l\u00e1mparas y artefactos motivados por el necesario respeto hacia el medio ambiente.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">En una etapa m\u00e1s avanzada, destaca por sus instalaciones. En la Bienal de la Habana, 2003, present\u00f3 la video instalaci\u00f3n\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Inc\u00f3gnito<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">con el\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">marketing de\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">la crema facial de igual nombre y sus bondades pixelantes. El cosm\u00e9tico supuestamente tornaba irreconocible el rostro de quienes la usar\u00e1n tocando el tema de la vigilancia sobre el sujeto en el mundo contempor\u00e1neo. En la actualidad, Oduber potencia mucho m\u00e1s estos medios.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">En el camino inverso, el otro bloque de artistas concuerda en las prospecciones en lo personal. Elvis L\u00f3pez representa uno de los paradigmas de esta orientaci\u00f3n. Sus aportes m\u00e1s significativos est\u00e1n localizados justamente en los noventa, pues su posterior responsabilidad en la direcci\u00f3n de la academia Ateliers\u201989 retiene buena parte de su tiempo.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00b3 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">En 1994 participa en la Quinta Bienal de La Habana con el pol\u00edptico de dibujos\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Social Critical, Serie no 5\/Cuba<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, 1993, una secuencia con temas como la isla, el sida, petr\u00f3leo y otros. Eran obras hasta cierto punto herm\u00e9ticas, como sus pinturas iniciales. En una abrupta transici\u00f3n meses despu\u00e9s asiste a la 22 Bienal de Sao Paulo con un enfoque tridimensional de base fotogr\u00e1fica y autorreferencial, en definitiva la constante que le identificar\u00eda. En esa l\u00ednea discursiva produce la trilog\u00eda\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Playing with the Gods, 1994,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, con origen en fotos de su primera comuni\u00f3n,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Amnesia,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">1997 y la video instalaci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">E mariposa,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">1997<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0a partir del fragmento de una canci\u00f3n infantil en papiamento extra\u00eddo de su ni\u00f1ez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Al margen de los recuerdos de la infancia o del uso del archivo fotogr\u00e1fico, su obra no reflexiona solo sobre s\u00ed mismo. El punto medular de su obra es la compleja construcci\u00f3n de las identidades, el atrincheramiento y la salvaguarda de lo personal, lo que Okwui Enwezor entiende como la dislocaci\u00f3n, el desarraigo, el desplazamiento y la dispersi\u00f3n, el exilio y la alienaci\u00f3n tomando terreno, incluso, en las habitaciones de la casa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Con el tiempo Muyale perfila mucho mejor los recursos a emplear. Su repertorio contiene registros personales, religiosos, de la pol\u00edtica global y caribe\u00f1a, de las manualidades femeninas, el papel moneda y objetos del consumo. En Aruba est\u00e1n sucediendo procesos de actualizaci\u00f3n. El empuje expansivo de voces m\u00e1s j\u00f3venes es perceptible en la construcci\u00f3n de nuevos trazados y narraciones, con predomino de las performances, los fundamentos del video, los dispositivos digitales, los manejos en la red y\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">emergent media.<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Ryan Oduber podr\u00eda ser el enlace con esta hornada de relevo y de continuadores: Kevin Schut, Natusha Croes, los hermanos Ken y Jess Wolff  y Velvet Ramos, entre otros, o con artista de otras nacionalidades radicados all\u00ed, como Rob Ter Haar, Holanda, Nelson Gonz\u00e1lez y Hugo Palmar, de Venezuela.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Entre estos \u00faltimos, Nelson Gonz\u00e1lez se inserta en el medio cultural como un arube\u00f1o m\u00e1s. Caracterizado por las hibridaciones disciplinares, recientemente participa en la Duod\u00e9cima Bienal de La Habana, 2015, donde presenta\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vamos a ver si eso es verdad\u2026!\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">una suerte de performance-acontecimiento \u2014Fredric Jameson. Como director interino del Instituto di Cultura, Evelino Fingal, con el respaldo  de Elvis L\u00f3pez, instrumenta un meditado proyecto promocional contribuyendo a posicionar al pa\u00eds en el mapamundi visual contempor\u00e1neo. La Bienal de Pintura del Caribe y Centroam\u00e9rica de Santo Domingo, 1992 fue el punto de partida. Un a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Carib Art<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Curazao. En 1994 Aruba comienza a asistir de manera sostenida a la Bienal de La Habana hasta el presente. El recorrido incluye la 22 Bienal Internacional de Sao Paulo, 1994;\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Karibishe Kunst Heute,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">en Alemania, 1994;\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Caribe insular. Es una de las iniciativas pioneras de pedagog\u00eda no regular en el Caribe contempor\u00e1neo y un referente inspirador para espacios posteriores afines.<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Este texto es una s\u00edntesis de un estudio mucho m\u00e1s amplio sobre el arte contempor\u00e1neo en Aruba.
